It’s hard to imagine a better feeling than being healthy, happy, and full of energy. If you want to feel that way 24/7, then it’s time for you to get your diet in check. There are many ways to improve your diet, and it may take some time to figure out which changes work best for you, but with a little effort, you’ll be on your way to a healthier life.

Here are seven practical tips for how to improve your diet:

1. Take a multivitamin every day

Some people don’t get enough of certain vitamins or minerals in their daily diets. Instead of throwing caution to the wind and hoping for the best, you should take a multivitamin every day. It sounds simple, but it could have a significant impact on your overall health.

2. Drink more water.

Water hydrates you, helps your digestive system and quenches thirst better than any other beverage on the planet. It also has zero calories. It just makes sense that it should be your first choice for a beverage any time you’re thirsty or want something to drink.

3. Eat five servings of fruits & veggies daily.

Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that help your body function properly and help you lead a happier, healthier lifestyle. It’s hard to think about eating five servings of fruits and veggies all at once, so it makes sense to spread them out throughout the day with strawberries at breakfast and a salad for lunch.

4. Reduce your sugar intake.

Sugar is hidden in so many foods, and it’s not all just found in candies or sweets. Be on the lookout for sugars in cereals, tomato sauces, and energy drinks. Some healthy foods are naturally higher in sugar, so be careful to check the nutritional label when possible. Start reading ingredient lists and avoid foods that could lead to higher blood glucose levels, like white breads or pastas.

5. Eat whole ingredients instead of processed foods. 

Processed foods are full of sugar, sodium, and other harmful chemicals. Skip the processed foods and go for whole ingredients, which are critical to a healthy diet. Sweet potatoes are a good example of an ingredient that is whole and healthy, while corn chips are a processed food with artificial ingredients. Instead of eating the chips, make your own homemade tortilla chips or grab a banana to eat as a snack instead.

6. Avoid salt as much as possible.

Salt is found in a variety of foods, but nowhere in such huge quantities as in processed foods. That’s because it is often used to hide the presence of less desirable ingredients. So if your soup has too much salt, there’s a chance the food manufacturer had to add extra salt as a preservative. 

7. Make a game plan.

Set a goal of improving your diet and then stay focused on that goal. Figure out what healthy foods to eat and how much you should eat each day. You can’t move forward in changing your diet if you don’t start somewhere.

Learning to eat healthier is a process. Just remember that you’re not alone, and as long as you can make changes consistently, you’ll see positive results. Don’t worry if it takes a little longer than expected to reach your goal. As long as you’re trying to improve your diet, the incremental changes you make on a daily basis will pay dividends in the long term.
